Community arts and crafts for older people continues thanks to grant funding.

Thanks to a £3,000 grant from The Gateshead Housing Company’s Community Fund, Gateshead charity, Teams and Bensham Community Care is able to continue its beneficial creative activities for older people.

Teams and Bensham Community Care is based in the heart of the residential area of Teams in Gateshead. For 30 years they have provided lunch clubs and activities every weekday, as well as transport from home and back again, for older people living in the inner west and central Gateshead communities.

Each Tuesday morning, the centre holds its Craft and Chat group, which makes made-to-order personalised greetings cards as well as a range of seasonal cards throughout the year.

Throughout the week at its various lunch clubs, Activities Assistant Karen also runs various creative projects including paper crafts, flower arranging, music and memory activities that the attendees thoroughly enjoy.

Bernie Gill, Trustee of Teams and Bensham Community Care, said: “We are really grateful to The Gateshead Housing Company for supporting our arts activities over the next 12 months. Creative pursuits at our centre are well loved by our attendees. They are excited to learn new skills and share their creations with loved ones. We’ve seen how important arts and crafts activities can be in helping to bring people together, ease isolation and improve well-being therefore we are thrilled to be able to keep it going for another year.”

Teams and Bensham Community Care is a registered charity supporting older people in Gateshead to alleviate and prevent the ill-effects of isolation and vulnerability. For almost three decades, we have provided lunch clubs, men’s groups, art and activities every weekday in our welcoming and accessible centre for up to 25 people each day. Our on-site cooks create traditional, freshly cooked meals and desserts as well as freshly baked goods for our beneficiaries to take home.
