Furniture Charity Secures Funds from Nationwide Building Society

Gateshead's community furniture charity, Foundations, has received £35,000 in grant funding to help local households in hardship to lead stable and sustainable home lives from which they can thrive.

At the request of it's members, Nationwide dedicates 1% of pre-tax profits to good causes with the aim of helping people to find a place fit to call home. Foundations is honoured to be one of the 12 charities selected in the North East to support this aim.

Foundations will be using the funds to provide support to over 800 households to quickly overcome disadvantage when trying to create, rebuild or maintain a stable and secure home life.

Households experiencing financial hardship can feel that they have no alternatives but to live in uncomfortable conditions without the essentials such as a safe place to sleep, storage and seating. Even more concerning is the lure of door step lenders, loan sharks and other high-interest lenders online and on the high street that can make financial hardship for vulnerable people even worse.

Funding will allow Foundations to reach even more people in hardship, including the growing number of people who experience in-work poverty, debt, rent arrears, crisis and significant disadvantage. The charity will work to ensure that people can access support to have a sustainable home environment from which they can thrive.

Foundation's Project Development Officer, Michelle Scott said: "We are thrilled to have been chosen to receive such a generous grant from Nationwide Building Society. It is a privilege to be able to make a lasting difference to our community and we are grateful for the opportunity to help even more households in hardship across Gateshead to lead safe, settled and comfortable home lives."

Foundations will be sharing information about it's grant with customers at Nationwide Building Society on New Bridge Street, Newcastle on Wednesday 27th November from 11am to noon.
