How to Recycle Your Unwanted Furniture in Gateshead

Updated: Jan 6

We've all been there. The sofa you once loved no longer fits in with your new decor. You've moved home and that side table you've had for years just won't fit anywhere. Your dining table is looking a bit tired, but it holds too many memories to let go of...

Our homes and their contents are more than bricks, wood and fabric. So when it's time to make a change, it's wonderful to know that your items can be used by someone else who really needs them.

The Furniture Reuse Network highlights that 10 million household items are sent to landfill every year, but 3 million of these items could be reused, particularly by people in poverty and/or crisis.

Community furniture charities up and down the country, like Foundations, are helping to divert furniture away from landfill and into the homes of people who are experiencing hardship.

Foundations Furniture takes you through everything you need to know about donating your household items to their charity.

Who Will My Furniture Help?

Your furniture will help a Gateshead resident that is experiencing hardship. We help around 900 households each year, who come to us for help for many reasons. We've seen first hand that it can be life changing.

What Can I Donate?

Here are some examples of the furniture we collect:

  • Sofas/three-piece suites

  • Bedroom furniture

  • Beds and headboards

  • Mattresses

  • Dining tables and chairs

  • Book cases/wall units

  • Coffee tables

  • Small electrical appliances

  • Kitchen Appliances

  • Adult and Children's Bikes

Which areas of the North East Can Donate?

We collect furniture from most areas in the North East. If you're unsure, please reach out and ask us.

How Much Does it Cost?

Collection is always free of charge

Is My Furniture in Good Enough Condition to donate?

Our team will help you all the way, from your first email or phone call, to the day and time we pick up your items. Here are some things to consider:-

  • Is it in a clean and tidy condition?

  • Is it unbroken?

  • Is it safe for use?

  • Is any fabric/material unstained and odourless?

  • Is it complete with no missing parts?

  • If donating units, are they no bigger than 4ft in length?

  • Does the sofa(s) or upholstered item(s) carry a Fire Safety Tag

Fire safety tag to look out for - it must be attached

What Happens to My Furniture Once I've Donated it?

Once we have collected your items, we bring it back to our charity shop on Askew Road West, Teams in Gateshead. If it is an appliance, we PAT test it for safety, and ensure it is in good working order, and any minor repairs are carried out on furniture. Once this this is complete, the items are made available to people in hardship.

We cannot disclose confidential information about our beneficiaries but we do know how each item we receive has gone on to help a local household. If you'd like to know exactly how your item has helped, please give us a call or email around one month after you have donated.

The Furniture I want to donate is originally from Foundations, can I still donate it?

Of course! So long as the item is in good condition as described above, we'd be really grateful for your donation back to the charity.
